Values Compass Guide

Students will identify and articulate their core personal values, create a visual values compass rose, reflect in writing how values guide decisions, and share insights with peers.

Understanding personal values builds self-awareness, supports positive decision-making, and fosters empathy. This lesson strengthens students’ ability to recognize and apply their values in real-life situations.

Compass Building Steps

Introduce the slide deck by inviting students to build their own compass rose that reflects their personal values. Emphasize that each step is part of a simple process and that creativity is encouraged.

Step 1: Draw Your Circle & Cross

Guide students to center their paper in landscape or portrait orientation. Demonstrate drawing a clean circle using a cup or compass tool. Then draw a straight vertical and horizontal line through the center to form a cross.

Step 2: Mark the Cardinal Points

Show an example slide or use the board to label each point. Stress neatness and accuracy — a ruler or straight edge can help. Invite a volunteer to label their compass on the board.

Step 3: Assign Your Values

Refer back to students’ brainstormed values. Encourage them to choose four distinct values that resonate most. Offer examples: honesty, kindness, curiosity, responsibility.

Step 4: Decorate Your Compass

Encourage artistic expression. You might show a quick demo of adding a small symbol (e.g., heart for kindness) or a splash of color around a value. Emphasize that there is no “wrong” decoration.

Reflection & Discussion

Prepare students for a pair-share and group discussion. Encourage them to reflect on how their compass can serve as a guide in real life.
