"Trauma and Stress-Related Disorders" Trauma and stress-related disorders develop when someone is exposed to a traumatic or stressful event. It's normal to feel afraid after a traumatic situation. For most people, these initial symptoms of fear improve. However, people with trauma and stress-related disorders may continue to feel stressed or frightened for a long time, even when they are not in danger. One of the most common of these disorders is PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is a disorder that involves difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. These events may include a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, or sexual violence. This condition can also occur if someone is threatened with death, sexual violence, or serious injury. People with PTSD may experience flashbacks, bad dreams, and feelings of being tense or on edge. While PTSD is often seen as a condition that affects individuals coming back from war, there are actually many different types of people affected by this disorder.
