Behavior Detectives Lesson Plan

Students will identify and categorize expected vs. unexpected behaviors in classroom and playground contexts to improve social awareness and self-regulation.

Understanding social norms helps kindergarteners build self-awareness, communicate appropriately, and make positive behavior choices that support a harmonious classroom and playground.

Behavior Detectives

Welcome students! Introduce today’s mission: we are Behavior Detectives. Explain that we’ll learn how to tell expected behaviors (good for everyone) from unexpected behaviors (that can cause problems).

Objectives

Read the objectives aloud. Emphasize the “why” behind each objective so students understand the purpose.

What Are Expected Behaviors?

Define expected behaviors: those that keep everyone safe, happy, and learning. Use hand‐raising and quiet walking as examples.

What Are Unexpected Behaviors?

Define unexpected behaviors: those that disrupt or can hurt others’ feelings. Use shouting and pushing as examples.

Examples: Let’s Practice!

Show a few of the picture cards one at a time. Ask the class: “Expected or unexpected?” Prompt them to explain their thinking.

Sorting Detective Activity

Explain how groups will work. Distribute materials: badges, cards, sorting mats. Circulate and prompt groups with questions.

Group Discussion & Reflection

Invite each group to share one unexpected behavior they found and explain why they chose it. Record key ideas on chart paper.

Closure & Exit Ticket

Explain the exit ticket. Circulate to support students as they work. Collect tickets to assess understanding.
