Welcome the students and introduce today’s lesson. Explain that they will become ‘Behavior Detectives’ and learn to spot expected vs. unexpected behaviors. Use an enthusiastic tone to build excitement.
Warm-Up: Expected vs. Unexpected
Guide students through a quick thumbs-up/thumbs-down game. Show examples like raising hand vs. calling out. Record student responses on the anchor chart as you go.
What Are Expected & Unexpected Behaviors?
Define key terms clearly. Ask students to share their own examples after you read the definitions.
Explain the detective mission. Hand out badges and model sorting a sample card. Think aloud as you decide if it’s expected or unexpected.
Explain pair work. Circulate to prompt deeper thinking and ask “Why?” when classifications differ.
Bring the class back together. Invite 2–3 pairs to share one expected and one unexpected example. Record their ideas on the anchor chart and facilitate consensus.
Close the lesson by encouraging reflection. Collect drawings to assess understanding and plan follow-up support.
