Brave Hearts Lesson Plan

Children will help Grandma Maya identify and name common confidence barriers and suggest simple strategies to overcome them, building empathy and self-confidence.

Early social-emotional learning promotes resilience and empathy. This lesson helps Pre-Kers recognize fears, support others, and practice expressing emotions, laying a foundation for healthy self-esteem.

Welcome everyone! Show the title slide and get the children excited. Say: “Today we are going to help Grandma Maya feel brave!”

Our Goal Today

Read the slide out loud: “Our goal today is to help Grandma Maya name her feelings and find ways to be brave.”

Warm-Up: Brave or Scared?

Ask: “What makes someone feel brave? What makes someone feel scared?” Point to faces on the chart.

Meet Grandma Maya

Introduce Grandma Maya: “She’s 53 and sometimes feels shy or doubtful.” Show the story poster.

Story Time: Grandma Maya’s Challenge

Read the story. At key moments pause and ask: “How do you think Grandma Maya feels?” When she faces a challenge, display the matching barrier card.

Confidence Barriers

Hold up each card and name the barrier. Ask: “Have you ever felt like this?”

Interactive Activity

Explain each step and help children pick cards. Encourage sharing ideas.

Reflection Time

Bring everyone back together. Ask each child to point to how they feel now on the chart.

Great Job, Brave Helpers!

Praise the group and hand out stickers. Say: “You are all brave helpers!”
