Bridging the Gap

Welcome the student, explain confidentiality, and introduce today’s 15-minute session. Review the agenda: 1) Check-In, 2) Explore Feelings, 3) Self-Compassion Practice, 4) Goal-Setting, 5) Wrap-Up.

Feelings Check-In

Use the [Feelings Check-in Form](#feelings-check-in-form). Ask the student to rate her mood (1–10) and circle or name 2–3 feelings about her conflict with her mom. Listen actively, validate, and affirm her experience.

Exploring Your Feelings

Ask open-ended questions to deepen understanding: e.g. “What feels hardest when you try to talk with your mom?” Reflect back key words (“You feel ___ when…”). Normalize her struggle and remind her it’s OK to find this hard.

Self-Compassion Practice

Introduce and lead a brief self-compassion exercise using the [Self-Compassion Guide](#self-compassion-guide). Model placing a hand on the heart, gentle breathing, and saying kind phrases to yourself as a friend would.

Setting a Small Goal

Invite the student to pick one small, achievable step she feels safe trying: e.g., writing a short note, choosing a calm moment to speak. Record it on the [Communication Goal Worksheet](#communication-goal-worksheet) and confirm she feels comfortable.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Summarize the check-in, feelings explored, and the chosen goal. Ask how she feels about the session and the plan. Encourage her to keep practicing self-compassion. Discuss or schedule any needed follow-up support. Offer comfort items as needed.
