Calm Core: Emotional Regulation Session

Welcome the student into the calm space. Explain that today’s session is confidential and focused on helping them understand and manage strong emotions. Outline the three main steps: reflect, practice, and plan.

1. Introduction and Check-In

Say: “Thanks for joining me in this calm space. Our goal today is to notice what you’re feeling and learn ways to feel better quickly. Everything we talk about stays between us.”

2. Identify Emotions

If the student seems unsure, offer examples of emotions (e.g., frustrated, excited, anxious). Encourage them to be honest and remind them there are no wrong answers.

3. Explore Triggers

Use open-ended prompts such as “Can you tell me what happened just before you felt that way?” or “What thoughts were running through your mind?” Validate their experience.

4. Practice Calming Techniques

Explain each card if needed. When timing their practice, say: “Let’s set the timer for 2 minutes and try this together.” Afterward, ask how their body or mind felt.

5. Plan for Next Time

Guide the student: “Which strategies would you like to use next time you feel overwhelmed? Where might you practice these?” Encourage them to write clear, specific steps.

Great Job! You’re Ready

Offer genuine praise: “You did a great job reflecting and practicing. Remember, you have a plan to help you feel calm anytime.” Close with encouragement.
