Lesson Plan

Calm Corner Lesson Plan

Students will learn to identify their emotions and use the Calm Corner to practice self-regulation strategies like deep breathing. They will demonstrate when and how to use these tools to manage their feelings.

Teaching students to manage emotions early supports social-emotional growth, reduces disruptions, and helps ELL and 504 students engage by providing clear visual and language supports.

Welcome to the Calm Corner!

Say: "Good morning, friends! Today we are going to learn about our Calm Corner. We're going to learn how to recognize our feelings and calm down when we feel big emotions. Ready? Let's go!"

How Are You Feeling?

Say: "Let's check in. How are you feeling today? Show me a thumbs up if you feel happy, thumbs sideways if you feel just okay, or thumbs down if you feel sad or upset. I’ll give you a moment to show me."

What Is the Calm Corner?

Say: "This is our Calm Corner. It’s a special spot in our room to help us calm down. Here we have: • Breathing strategy cards • Quiet cushions • Soft seat We can go there when our feelings feel big."

Let's See How It Works

Say: "Watch me: I pretend I feel frustrated. I walk to the Calm Corner. I pick a breathing card. I take a deep breath in for 1–2–3, then out for 1–2–3. I repeat three times. Now I feel calmer!"

Your Turn to Practice

Say: "Now it’s your turn. In pairs, pick one feeling from our chart, choose a strategy card, and do three deep breaths together. When you’re done, give me a thumbs up if you feel calmer!"
