Calm in the Storm Plan

In this 15-minute one-on-one session, the student will define anxiety, recognize personal physical and emotional signs, and practice deep breathing as a quick coping strategy.

This focused support helps the student build self-awareness of anxiety triggers and equips them with an immediate tool to feel safe, empowered, and in control during stressful moments.

Welcome the student and set a calm tone. Introduce today’s goals: define anxiety, spot personal signs, and practice a quick coping strategy.

What is Anxiety?

Ask: “What do you think anxiety means?” Then share this simple definition and point to the handout for more details.

Your Personal Signs

Hand the student the worksheet and prompt them to list their own signs. Discuss each one briefly to validate their experience.

Feelings Thermometer

Show the Feelings Thermometer Visual. Invite the student to choose a number and explain why to normalize ups and downs.

Deep Breathing Steps

Introduce each breathing step slowly, demonstrating and checking that the student is comfortable.

Let's Practice

Guide the student through three full breathing cycles, inviting them to notice any changes in how they feel.

Reflection & Take-Away

Ask the student to choose their preferred strategy and write it down. Reinforce availability for future support.
