Session 1: Recognizing Our Emotions

Welcome everyone! Today we’ll introduce ourselves to the world of emotions. Use this slide to set a positive tone and review our session outline.

Objectives

Read through each objective and check for understanding. Emphasize why each objective matters for emotional regulation.

Emotion Wheel

Display the physical Emotion Wheel Poster. Explain how emotions can relate to each other (e.g., “angry” and “frustrated”). Invite a volunteer to point to a feeling on the wheel.

Emotion Faces Cards

Show the Emotion Faces Cards one by one. Ask students to name the emotion aloud before revealing the label.

Matching Activity

Explain instructions clearly. Model one round of matching. Circulate to support pairs, especially students with IEPs or language needs.

Group Discussion

Encourage volunteers to share briefly. Write examples next to each emotion on chart paper. Reinforce respectful listening and use sentence starters if needed.

Reflection Journal

Distribute or have students open their Emotion Journals. Circulate to offer prompts and praise. Collect journals or have them keep them for the next session.

Great Work Today!

Congratulate the group on their participation. Preview Session 2: understanding why we feel what we feel.
