Lesson Plan

Question Quest Plan

4th graders will analyze and craft more sophisticated open-ended and closed-ended questions, refine closed questions into open ones, and conduct peer interviews to deepen conversational skills in a small-group setting.

Advanced question-posing boosts critical thinking, enriches peer dialogue, and strengthens social communication for older students.

Open vs. Closed Questions

Welcome class! Today we will learn about two types of questions that help us talk with our friends and learn more.

Closed-Ended Questions

Explain that closed-ended questions can be answered with a short answer or yes/no. Give extra examples if students need clarification.

Open-Ended Questions

Explain that open-ended questions encourage longer, detailed answers. Model thinking out loud as you answer the example.

Closed vs. Open

Compare the two formats side by side. Highlight the question words that often start open-ended questions.

Can You Identify?

Read each question aloud and ask students to call out “Open!” or “Closed!” as you go.

Great Job!

Praise their effort and explain the next step. Transition into the sorting activity using their new knowledge.
