Slide Deck
Conflict Compass
Welcome students. Introduce today’s focus: understanding how we handle disagreements and using the “Conflict Compass” to guide us. Emphasize that this toolkit builds CASEL competencies: self-awareness, social awareness, and responsible decision-making.
Why Focus on Conflict?
Explain why learning about conflict matters. Connect to real life: group projects, friendships, family. Stress how conflicts can be opportunities to grow.
CASEL Competencies
Briefly review the three CASEL competencies we’ll practice: self-awareness, social awareness, and responsible decision-making. Point out that these guide each conflict style.
Introducing the Conflict Compass
Display the graphic of a compass divided into four quadrants (avoiding, competing, compromising, collaborating). Describe that each style has strengths and limits.
Conflict Styles Explained
For each style, give one or two quick scenarios: e.g., avoiding when you need time to cool off; competing when safety is at risk. Invite students to ask clarifying questions.
Which Style Is Yours?
Guide students through a quick poll: raise hands or use clickers. Encourage honest sharing; there’s no right or wrong style. Record results mentally for discussion later.
When to Use Each Style
Highlight that each style can be useful in different situations. Preview the next activity: practicing these styles through scenario games.
Next Up: Resolution Relay
Transition to the Resolution Relay game. Explain that students will apply one style at a time to solve scenarios in teams.
