Lesson Plan

Control Your Calm Lesson Plan

Students will learn to recognize their emotions, understand triggers, and apply at least two practical strategies to regulate their feelings during challenging situations.

Helping 7th graders develop emotional regulation builds self-awareness, reduces classroom disruptions, and equips students with lifelong coping skills to manage stress and maintain a positive learning environment.

Control Your Calm

Welcome students and introduce the lesson’s purpose: learning to recognize and regulate emotions. Emphasize that everyone experiences feelings and this session will give tools to manage them.

Agenda

Quickly run through today’s four parts so students know what to expect and how time will be used.

Icebreaker: Emotion Check-In

Distribute the handout, invite each student to mark their current feeling on the thermometer, and share one word describing it. Normalize all emotions.

What Is Emotional Regulation?

Define emotional regulation and why it matters. Model deep breathing and positive self-talk, then ask for volunteers to demonstrate other strategies.

Guided Scenario Practice

Explain the scenario practice instructions, pair students, circulate, and support as needed.

Cool-Down & Personal Goal

Invite a few pairs to share their scenario, emotion, and chosen strategies. Guide students to set realistic goals.

Next Steps

Wrap up by encouraging students to use their goals and reflect on progress. Mention that they can revisit strategies anytime.
