Coping Champions Lesson Plan

Students will identify and name big feelings and learn three simple coping strategies—deep breathing, using a cozy corner, and emotion faces—to self-regulate and maintain classroom harmony.

Young children benefit from early self-regulation skills to manage big emotions, reduce meltdowns, and build a positive, calm classroom climate.

Welcome, everyone! Introduce today’s lesson: we are becoming Coping Champions who can handle big feelings with fun strategies.

Our Mission

Explain our mission: recognize feelings, learn tools, and practice together.

Meet the Emotion Faces

Show each card from [Emotion Faces Cards](#emotion-faces-cards). Ask: “What feeling is this?” Invite children to share times they felt that way.

Breathing Buddies

Distribute one soft toy per child using the [Breathing Buddies Printable](#breathing-buddies-printable). Model placing it on your belly and taking slow breaths.

Shake & Freeze Dance

Play an upbeat song. Say “Shake!” – children dance and wiggle. Then say “Freeze!” – they stop and hold still. Repeat, ending on “Freeze.”

Explore the Cozy Corner

Lead children to the area prepared using the [Cozy Corner Setup Guide](#cozy-corner-setup-guide). Model how to sit quietly and choose a calming item.

Role-Play Practice

Divide children into small groups. Provide an emotion card and prompt: choose a strategy (breathing buddy, cozy corner, or naming feelings) and practice using it.

You’re Coping Champions!

Gather in a circle and praise their efforts. Encourage them to use these tools anytime they feel big feelings.
