Coping Toolbox Lesson Plan

In this 45-minute lesson, students will learn five evidence-based coping skills to manage anxiety, reflect on personal experiences, and create a personalized “coping toolbox” to use throughout the school year.

Newcomer 9th graders often face heightened anxiety in a new environment. Teaching practical coping strategies fosters emotional regulation, peer support, and confidence, improving well-being and academic engagement.

Coping Toolbox

Welcome students. Introduce yourself and the purpose: to build a personal toolbox of coping skills for managing stress and anxiety in a new school environment.

Why Learn Coping Skills?

Explain why coping skills are important, especially when starting at a new school. Emphasize resilience and peer support.

Lesson Objectives

Review the learning objectives. Ask students to keep these in mind as they go through the lesson.

What Is Anxiety?

Define anxiety in simple terms and use ELL supports by pointing to vocabulary list if needed.

Five Coping Skills Overview

Introduce the five skills at a high level before diving into details.

Breathing & Muscle Relaxation

Model deep breathing: inhale for 4, hold 2, exhale for 6. Then guide students through a quick progressive muscle relaxation sequence.

Self-Talk & Visualization

Explain how changing self-talk can shift mood. Lead a 1-minute guided visualization.

Physical Movement

Demonstrate simple stretches or walking in place. Encourage students to think of other movements they enjoy.

Reading & Reflection

Explain reading activity: distribute the [Coping Strategies Reading](#coping-strategies-reading) and guide students on how to annotate.

Create Your Coping Toolbox

Introduce the main activity. Distribute the [Emotion Regulation Activity Sheet](#emotion-regulation-activity-sheet). Show an example toolbox and model drawing.

Debrief & Closure

Guide the debrief. Hand out index cards and prompt students to write their reminder phrase. Offer positive feedback.
