Digital Detectives: Session 1

Welcome students to Digital Detectives Session 1. Introduce the idea of being a detective online—looking carefully at what we see and asking questions when something doesn’t feel right.

Warm-Up: Digital Detective Chat

Ask: “What makes someone a good detective?” and “How can we use those skills online?” Chart their ideas (paying attention, asking questions, telling someone).

Scenario 1: Friendly Game Recommendation

Show an image of two friends chatting about a new game. Ask students to vote “Safe” or “Unsafe.” Guide discussion: it’s safe because you know the friend and it’s about a game recommendation.

Scenario 2: Stranger’s Friend Request

Show an image of a stranger sending a friend request. Ask students to vote. Emphasize: we only accept requests from people we know in real life.

Scenario 3: Unwanted Image

Show an image of an unwanted photo from an unknown person. Ask students to vote. Highlight: receiving images from strangers is unsafe and a trusted adult should be told.

Scenario 4: Secret Request

Show an image of someone asking to keep a message secret. Ask students to vote. Discuss why secret requests from strangers or even friends can be unsafe.

Safe vs. Unsafe: Key Signs

Summarize key signs: • Safe: known people, harmless topics, clear purpose • Unsafe: strangers, private images, secret requests Use this slide to reinforce the difference before distributing the worksheet.

Speak-Up Reminder

Ask each student to name one trusted adult they will speak to if they see something online that feels wrong. Invite a thumbs-up to show they feel ready to speak up.
