Direction Detectives Plan

Students will enhance active listening by following 2–3 step oral directions in a fun detective game, improving their social communication and confidence.

Following multi-step directions underpins classroom success and peer interaction. This individual lesson builds listening skills, boosts self-esteem, and prepares students for group activities.

Direction Detectives

Welcome slide for the student. Greet them as the Detective of the Day and build excitement about listening and following clues.

Lesson Objective

Explain why we’re learning this skill. Tie it to classroom success and teamwork.

Materials

Show the student all materials and let them touch or hold items as you introduce them.

Warm-Up: Detective Introduction

(5 min) Present the detective badge, model a two-step direction, and have the student repeat it back. Use enthusiastic, clear language.

Main Activity: Follow the Clues

(15 min) Guide the student through 3–4 cards. Increase to three steps if they’re ready; reduce to two if they struggle. Offer prompts like “Tell me step two before you start.”

Independent Practice: Create Your Own Directions

(5 min) Empower the student to lead. Listen carefully to their directions and follow exactly. Praise specific listening strategies.

Cool-Down & Reflection: Detective Debrief

(5 min) Reflect on what worked best. Celebrate success with a sticker or small prize.
