Emotion Detective Plan

Students will learn to recognize and label their feelings, practice deep breathing to calm down, and use positive self-talk, empowering them to manage emotions independently.

Building emotion regulation helps students develop self-awareness, reduces stress responses, and promotes a positive classroom climate by giving them tools to cope with strong feelings.

Emotion Detective

Welcome the student and introduce the session: “Today you’re an Emotion Detective! We’ll learn tools to help you notice and manage your feelings.”

Objectives

Read the objectives aloud and explain briefly why each is important.

Warm-Up & Check-In

Ask the student “How are you feeling right now?” Model how to name one emotion and encourage honesty.

Deep Breathing Practice

Show the [Deep Breathing Script Card](#deep-breathing-script-card). Model belly breathing and guide three breaths.

Find Your Emotion

Display the [Emotion Scale Poster](#emotion-scale-poster). Ask the student to recall a moment and point to the matching emotion.

Emotion Detective Worksheet

Give the student the [Emotion Detective Worksheet](#emotion-detective-worksheet). Prompt them to draw and label.

Positive Self-Talk

Lay out the [Self-Talk Prompt Cards](#self-talk-prompt-cards). Let the student choose and read one aloud with confidence.

Reflection & Next Steps

Ask how the student feels now and praise their detective work. Encourage them to pick one strategy to use today.
