Lesson Plan

Emotional Superpowers Lesson Plan

Students will identify and label their emotions using an emotion wheel, reflect on personal triggers in a journal, and practice two regulation strategies—deep breathing and positive self-talk—to manage emotional responses.

Developing emotional intelligence fosters self-awareness, improves stress management, and supports positive classroom behavior and relationships.

Emotional Superpowers

Welcome! Today, we’ll explore your Emotional Superpowers: how to recognize, understand, and manage your feelings. We’ll use tools like the Emotion Wheel, journaling, breathing, and self-talk.

Agenda

Briefly run through our 60-minute plan together so the student knows what to expect.

What Is an Emotion?

Ask: “What is an emotion? How do you know when you feel one?” Let the student share examples.

Emotion Wheel

Display the [Emotion Wheel Visual Aid](#emotion-wheel-visual-aid). Explain the core emotions in the center and how they branch out.

Recognizing Personal Emotions

Hand out the [Emotion Journal Template](#emotion-journal-template). Guide the student through each section.

Understanding Triggers

Review the completed journal entries with the student. Help them spot patterns and ask probing questions.

Practicing Regulation Strategies

Introduce both strategies, model each, then practice together.

Reflection & Action Plan

Provide the [Reflection Prompt Handout](#reflection-prompt-handout). Guide the student in writing an action plan.

Keep Practicing Your Superpowers!

Reinforce progress and encourage daily use of these tools. Remind the student you’re available for support.
