Empathy Explorers: A Journey to Understanding

Welcome students! Introduce today’s journey into empathy. Point out our goals: define empathy, explore feelings through a story, practice role‐play, and reflect in our journals. Remind them of materials: scenario cards, journals, chart paper, markers.

What Is Empathy?

Ask: “What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘empathy’?” Capture quick responses. Then share this concise definition and relate to their examples.

Why Empathy Matters

Briefly discuss each bullet. Invite volunteers to give personal examples of times empathy helped them or someone else.

Opening Story

Read the story aloud with expression. Pause after key sentences. Then ask students to think quietly for 30 seconds about how the character feels.

Discuss the Emotions

Facilitate a whole‐class discussion. Record all emotion words on chart paper. Encourage students to explain why they chose each word.

Role‐Play Scenarios

Explain the six steps on the slide. Hand out Scenario Cards. Circulate to support planning and ensure each group focuses on body language and tone.

Reflective Journaling

Distribute the Reflective Journals. Offer sentence starters on the board for support. Remind students to be honest and thoughtful.

Share & Discuss

Have students pair up and share insights for 3–4 minutes. Then invite a few pairs to share highlights with the whole class.

Exit Ticket & Takeaways

Explain the exit ticket process. Give each student a sticky note. Collect notes as they leave to gauge understanding and future focus areas.

Thank You, Empathy Explorers!

Praise the class for their hard work. Preview the next lesson on active listening and empathy in difficult conversations.
