Empathy in Action Lesson Plan

Students will analyze real-life scenarios to identify emotions and motivations, then role-play these perspectives to foster empathy and a more compassionate classroom community.

Developing empathy helps reduce conflicts, promotes inclusion, and builds students’ social–emotional skills by encouraging them to understand and respect others’ feelings.

Welcome students! Today we’re going to explore empathy—understanding how others feel—and practice stepping into someone else’s shoes.

What Is Empathy?

Define empathy, then ask students to share examples of times they felt someone understood them.

Why Empathy Matters

Highlight how empathy helps reduce conflict, build trust, and create inclusion.

Scenario 1: The New Student

Read aloud or have a volunteer read. Ask students to picture themselves in each role.

Guiding Questions

Explain students will use these questions on their worksheet to guide analysis.

Analyze Your Scenario

Divide into small groups. Distribute the Scenario Analysis Worksheet and index cards.

Role-Play Activity

Introduce the role-play guide and assign roles so each student practices expressing a different perspective.

Reflection & Share

After each skit, prompt the class to share how they felt and what surprised them.
