Empathy in Action

Welcome everyone! Today, we’re going to explore empathy—what it is, why it matters, and how we can practice it together. By the end of this session, you’ll have tried role-playing, shared your observations, and reflected in writing on what you learned.

What Is Empathy?

Begin by asking: “When have you felt truly understood?” Accept a few answers, then define empathy. Emphasize that empathy is different from sympathy—it’s stepping into someone else’s shoes.

Empathy in Action: A Story

Tell a short true or made-up story, e.g.: “Imagine Sara sees her friend Alex sitting alone. Instead of ignoring him, Sara remembers a time she felt lonely and sits with him, asking how he’s doing.”

Why Practice Empathy?

Highlight each point briefly. Ask students to nod or give a quick show of hands if they agree or have experienced each benefit.

Session Agenda

Review the flow and time allotted for each part. Make sure students know they’ll get to speak, observe, and write.

Role-Play Activity

Explain the role-play rules: 2 minutes to plan, 3 minutes to act, then switch. Monitor pairs and keep time.

Group Discussion

Bring everyone back together. Use the Reflection Prompt Handout to guide: “What did you notice? Which emotions stood out? How did the actor show empathy?”

Journal Writing

Distribute the journal template. Encourage honest reflection. Circulate to support students and prompt deeper thinking.

Closing Reflection

Invite a few volunteers to read their insights aloud. Then challenge students: “This week, notice one opportunity to practice empathy at home or school.”
