Lesson Plan

Expressive Movement Lesson Plan

Students will explore and express emotions (joy, sadness, surprise, etc.) through guided movement sequences, then interpret peers’ body language to build non-verbal communication skills and empathy.

By connecting physical movement with feelings, students deepen emotional awareness, strengthen empathy, and learn how body language conveys meaning—key social-emotional skills for collaboration and self-expression.

Expressive Movement Workshop

Welcome students to the Expressive Movement Workshop. Explain that today we’ll explore how our bodies can show feelings without words. Get everyone’s attention and set an enthusiastic tone.

Warm-Up: Gentle Stretches

Play a gentle warm-up track from the [Expressive Movement Music Playlist](#expressive-movement-music-playlist). Lead the class through each stretch, demonstrating and inviting students to follow along. Offer seated variations as needed.

Breathing Techniques

Guide students through breathing: inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth. Model slow breaths, showing chest and belly expansion. Remind them to stay relaxed.

Key Emotions

Introduce each emotion with a clear definition. Ask, “What does joy look like in your body?” and write student ideas on a board as you show the slide.

Expressing Emotions

Demonstrate each movement: jump for joy, slump for sadness, hands on cheeks for surprise, stomp for anger. Invite 2–3 volunteers to try their own version of one emotion move.

Group Activity Instructions

Explain the group activity step by step. Show students how to draw an Emotion Card and set a timer for 30-second music clips. Circulate to support creativity.

Partner Sharing & Observation

Have each group perform for their assigned partner group. Remind observers to watch carefully and note what they see.

Feedback Starters

Review each sentence starter aloud. Encourage students to use them when giving feedback to peers, focusing on positive and specific observations.

Reflection Question 1

Transition to a whole-class reflection circle. Read the question and invite volunteers to share. Acknowledge each response to reinforce a safe environment.

Reflection Question 2

Ask the second reflection question. Encourage students to connect others’ movements to their own feelings.

Reflection Question 3

Pose the final reflection. Guide discussion toward real-life applications of body language and empathy.

Key Takeaways

Summarize the workshop: highlight key takeaways, praise effort, and encourage students to notice body language in daily life.
