Lesson Plan

Feelings Freeze Guide

Students will pause, identify, and physically express basic emotions through guided freeze and statue activities, fostering early emotional awareness and self-regulation skills.

Developing emotional awareness and self-regulation in early childhood builds the foundation for healthy social interactions and coping strategies. This lesson empowers young learners to recognize feelings and apply simple strategies to manage them effectively.

Freeze Frames of Emotion

Welcome students and introduce the activity: “Today we’re going to play Freeze Frames of Emotion. When I show each face, we’ll ‘freeze’ our own faces to match it and name the feeling.”

Happy

Point to the picture and say, “This is Happy. Freeze your face in a big smile like this!” After a few seconds, ask volunteers: “How does your face feel when you’re happy?”

Sad

Introduce the next slide: “This is Sad. Let’s freeze with our mouths turned down and shoulders a little slumped.” After freezing, prompt: “What does sadness feel like in your face or body?”

Angry

Say, “Here is Angry. Make your eyebrows come together and press your lips tight.” Freeze for a few moments, then ask: “Where do you feel anger in your body?”

Surprised

Explain: “This is Surprised. Open your eyes wide and drop your jaw a little.” Hold the freeze, then discuss: “What happens to your face when you’re surprised?”

Scared

Show the last emotion: “This is Scared. Pull your shoulders up and hug yourself a bit—freeze!” After a moment, ask: “How does being scared feel in your body?”
