Lesson Plan

Feelings Friends Lesson Plan

Students will recognize and name four basic feelings (happy, sad, angry, surprised) through circle games and puppet play, practice sharing personal emotions, and listen to peers with kindness in a supportive group.

Identifying and talking about emotions builds empathy, self-awareness, and social skills in young learners, setting the stage for positive relationships and emotional regulation.

Feelings Friends

Welcome the children and introduce the lesson. Say: “Today we are going to be Feelings Friends! We’ll learn to name our feelings and listen to each other.”

Feelings Warm-Up

Use your [Feelings Flashcards](#feelings-flashcards). Hold up each card, name the feeling, and make the face. Then invite the children to do the same.

Puppet Emotion Story

Bring out the puppet. Tell a simple story: “Penny the Puppet lost her teddy. She looks sad.” Ask: “How does Penny feel?” and have children point to the poster.

Sharing Circle

Pass the puppet around the circle. Model first: “I feel happy when I play with friends.” Encourage children to use one or two words.

Emotion Sorting Game

Show the baskets and cards or toys. Invite each child to place their item in the basket with the matching feeling face.

High-Five Feelings

Gather the circle back together. Lead a cheerful “High-Five Feelings” round: each child high-fives their neighbor and says a feeling word.
