Feelings Toolbox

Welcome students to the Feelings Toolbox session. Briefly explain that today they’ll learn to recognize and manage big emotions using special tools. Remind them this is a safe space and they can share openly.

Introduction and Check-In

(5 minutes) • Use thumbs-up/middle/down check-in • Show Emotion Flashcards and have each student name how they feel • Record responses on a chart to validate feelings

Teach Emotion Identification

(7 minutes) • Display each Emotion Flashcard one at a time • Ask: “What emotion is this?” • Discuss facial cues and body language • Model an example sentence: “I feel ___ when ___.” Encourage student examples

Practice Calming Techniques

(8 minutes) • Introduce the three calming strategies cards • Guide the group through “5 Finger Breaths” step-by-step • Demonstrate “Squeeze and Release” with a stress ball or hands • Let students choose and practice a second technique

Create Your Personalized Toolbox

(7 minutes) • Hand out the Feelings Toolbox Template • Students pick 2–3 strategies, draw each tool, and write when/how to use it • Circulate to support drawing and writing choices

Reflection and Closing

(3 minutes) • Give each student a Reflection Journal Page • Prompt them to draw a real situation, label the feeling, choose a tool, and describe use • Collect journals as a formative check • Praise effort and remind them to use their toolbox anytime
