Objectives

Read each objective aloud and check for understanding. Emphasize how these skills help handle stressful situations.

Warm-Up: Deep Breathing

Guide the student step-by-step through each breath. Model slow counts and encourage focus on breathing.

What Is Rigid Thinking?

Display the [Flexible vs. Rigid Thoughts Poster](#session-1-flexible-rigid-poster). Define rigid thinking and read examples. Ask if they’ve heard thoughts like these.

What Is Flexible Thinking?

Switch to the flexible side of the poster. Define flexible thinking and read examples. Encourage the student to think of their own examples.

Activity: Identify Rigid Thoughts

Hand out the [Rigid Thoughts Identification Worksheet](#session-1-thoughts-worksheet). Guide the student through the first scenario, then let them try the next. Discuss why each thought is rigid.

Reflect & Personalize

Encourage the student to think of a real moment that felt upsetting. Write their thought and label it. Help them see it’s a safe space to share.

Game: Flexible Thinking

Orally present each scenario one at a time. Write the student’s flexible thought on blank paper. Praise creative or effortful responses.

Wrap-Up & Homework

Summarize the session’s key points. Hand out the [Flexible Thought Tracker Sheet](#session-1-thought-tracker) and explain the homework: track one rigid thought per day and write a flexible alternative. Praise their hard work.

Session 2 Lesson Plan

Help the student recognize personal triggers that drive their need for control and practice shifting toward flexible, choice-based responses.
