Friendship Circle Lesson Plan

In this lesson, 1st graders will identify qualities of good friends and practice friendly behaviors through giving compliments and a handshake activity.

Friendship Circle

Welcome everyone to our Friendship Circle! Introduce yourself and share that today we will talk about what makes a good friend and practice friendly behaviors.

What Makes a Good Friend?

Display the chart on the board or projector. Ask students to call out ideas, and write their responses onto the chart.

Compliment Pair-Up

Hand out one Compliment Card to each student. Model reading a card to a volunteer and receiving a “thank you” with a smile. Then set the timer for 1 minute per partner.

Handshake Practice

Explain each step slowly, then demonstrate with a volunteer. Invite pairs of students to practice while you circulate and give feedback.

Great Job, Friends!

Congratulate students on their effort. Encourage them to use these skills every day to build a positive classroom community.

What Is Friendship?

Ask students: “What is a friend?” Encourage a few volunteers to share examples of friendship in their lives.

Friendship Qualities

Display the [Friendship Qualities Chart](#friendship-qualities-chart) on the board. Record student ideas by writing or drawing examples.

Compliment Pair-Up

Model reading a Compliment Card with a volunteer. Hand out cards, set a 1-minute timer, and prompt students to switch partners when it rings.

Handshake Practice

Explain each handshake step slowly while demonstrating. Then invite pairs to practice, providing positive feedback as you circulate.

Great Job, Friends!

Congratulate students on their participation. Encourage them to use these friendship skills throughout the day.
