Goals in Action

Welcome students! Today we’ll learn how to set effective goals using the SMART framework. Our objective is for you to leave with a clear, actionable goal—academic, personal, or career-related—that you can track and achieve. Begin by briefly introducing yourself, then explain why goal setting matters: it builds motivation, focus, and self-advocacy.

Vague vs Specific Goals

Ask students: “What goals have you set before?” Record a couple of student responses. Then introduce the difference between a vague goal and a specific one. Use the examples on the slide to illustrate why specificity matters.

What Are SMART Goals?

Display or point to the [SMART Goals Anchor Chart](#smart-goals-anchor-chart-material). Define each letter, pausing for questions or quick examples from students.

Example: Turning It SMART

Walk through this sample goal refinement. Emphasize how each SMART element turns a general aim into a solid plan.

Hands-On SMART Practice

Distribute one [SMART Goals Worksheet](#smart-goals-worksheet-material) per pair. Explain: 1. Choose one academic or personal goal. 2. Work together to make it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. 3. I’ll circulate to help and offer feedback. You have 10 minutes.

Reflection & Closing

Invite 2–3 pairs to share their SMART goal aloud. Highlight strong examples. Distribute the [Goal Reflection Prompt Sheet](#goal-reflection-prompt-sheet-material). Ask students to spend 5 minutes writing: – How will you monitor progress? – What obstacles might arise and how will you overcome them? Collect worksheets and reflection sheets.
