Session 1: Foundations of Healthy Relationships

Welcome students to the Healthy Connections series. Introduce today’s focus: understanding what makes relationships healthy. Briefly explain that over six sessions they’ll build skills in communication, boundaries, and conflict resolution.

Objectives

Read through each objective. Emphasize that they’ll both learn definitions and practice applying them.

Warm-Up: Relationship Brainstorm

Pose the question on the board. Give 1 minute for silent ideas, then 2 minutes for pair-share. Encourage students to post their top 2–3 traits on chart paper stations.

Key Traits Overview

Summarize the four traits on the board as you display them. Briefly define each so students have context for the next slides.

Trust & Respect

Explain each definition and ask for a volunteer to share a real-life example of trust and respect.

Communication & Boundaries

Define communication and boundaries. Invite students to suggest examples of clear communication and healthy boundary setting.

Group Activity: Sort the Statements

Distribute the Discussion Prompt Cards. Explain that groups will sort statements into “Healthy” or “Unhealthy” on chart paper. Set a 10-minute timer and circulate to support.

Discussion: Deep Dive

Hand out scenario cards. Give groups 5 minutes to discuss why their assigned behavior is healthy or unhealthy. Then ask two groups to share key insights.

Exit Ticket & Reflection

Remind students to complete the exit ticket on the back of their vocabulary worksheet. Collect worksheets as they leave.

Next Steps

Preview Session 2’s focus on setting and respecting boundaries. Encourage students to reflect on today’s traits between now and next class.

Session 2 Lesson Plan

Students will understand the importance of boundaries in relationships by identifying personal limits, practicing how to communicate them, and applying boundary-setting strategies through interactive activities.

Clear boundaries help maintain respect, prevent misunderstandings, and ensure mutual comfort in relationships, empowering students to advocate for themselves and others.

Session 2: Setting & Respecting Boundaries

Welcome students to Session 2 of Healthy Connections. Today we'll dive into setting and respecting boundaries. Quickly recap Session 1 traits and connect boundaries to respect and communication.

Objectives

Review today’s objectives: define boundaries, identify types, practice “I” statements, and apply strategies.

Warm-Up: Boundary Brainstorm

Introduce the warm-up. Post the question, give 1 minute for silent listing, 2 minutes for pair-share, then capture top boundaries on index cards.

What Are Boundaries?

Explain the concept of boundaries: personal limits that protect our physical space, emotions, and digital privacy.

Types of Boundaries

Define and illustrate the three main types of boundaries with examples.

Real-Life Boundary Examples

Invite volunteers to share real-life examples for each boundary type and discuss why they matter.

Role-Play: Practice “I” Statements

Explain the role-play: pairs use their index cards and [Boundary Discussion Cards](#session-2-discussion-cards) to practice “I” statements.

Worksheet Reflection

Guide students to complete their worksheet: reflect on a situation and draft a clear boundary statement.

Exit Ticket

Collect the index cards as exit tickets to gauge student insights on boundaries.

Next Steps

Preview Session 3’s focus on communication skills. Encourage students to reflect on today’s insights until next time.

Session 3: Communication Skills

Welcome to Session 3 of Healthy Connections. Today we focus on communication skills: active listening, assertive speaking, and interpreting nonverbal cues to build stronger relationships.

Objectives

Read through each objective. Emphasize that students will practice both listening and speaking skills through interactive exercises.

Warm-Up: Listening Pairs

Explain the warm-up: students pair up and take turns speaking and listening. Encourage listeners to focus fully and paraphrase. Circulate to model paraphrasing.

Active Listening Skills

Introduce the three core active listening skills. Provide examples and ask volunteers to demonstrate paraphrasing or reflecting feelings.

Listening vs. Not Listening

Show pairs examples of listening vs. non-listening behaviors. Ask students to identify which is which and why.

Assertive Communication

Define communication styles. Emphasize how assertiveness respects both speaker and listener.

Nonverbal Cues

Explain nonverbal cues and why they matter. Invite students to act out open vs. closed postures.

Role-Play Practice

Outline the role-play activity. Remind students to use their active listening and assertive skills. Reference the discussion cards.

Worksheet Reflection

Guide students to complete the worksheet individually. Circulate and support drafting clear responses.

Exit Ticket & Next Steps

Collect exit tickets to gauge which communication skill students will focus on this week. Preview next session on conflict resolution.
