Building Our Kindness Code

Welcome everyone! Today we’re going to create our classroom’s Kindness Code for the digital world. We’ll define digital wellness, brainstorm positive behaviors, and draft short “We will…” statements together. Emphasize that each voice matters and that our shared guidelines help everyone feel safe and respected online.

What Is Digital Wellness?

Explain that digital wellness is like personal well-being, but for our online lives. It means keeping our mind, emotions, and relationships healthy when we use the internet, apps, and social media.

Why Kindness Online Matters

Connect kindness to real outcomes: fewer hurt feelings, stronger friendships, and a positive classroom culture. Invite students to share why they think online kindness matters.

Recognizing Online Behaviors

Introduce positive vs. negative behaviors. Ask for examples from the class and jot them on the board. Highlight how small actions online can have a big impact.

Brainstorm Your Kindness Traits

Explain the brainstorming activity: students will work in small groups to list at least five positive digital behaviors. Distribute the Code Creation Workshop Activity and remind them to write clearly.

Structuring Our Code Statements

Show students how to turn traits into manifesto statements. Refer to examples in the Digital Manifesto Guide. Emphasize clarity and brevity.

Next Steps

Prepare students for the drafting workshop. Remind them to use their brainstormed traits and the guide. Encourage groups to collaborate and keep statements concise.
