Kindness Quest Session 1 Lesson Plan

Students will learn the meaning of kindness, identify examples of kind actions, and practice planning a kind act by drawing it on a worksheet.

Building kindness awareness early fosters empathy, strengthens peer relationships, and creates a positive classroom community where students feel valued.

Kindness Quest: Session 1

Welcome students and introduce today’s session on kindness. Invite them to sit in a circle and get ready to learn.

Objectives

Read the three objectives aloud. Help students understand what they will learn today.

Story Time

Show the cover of Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. Explain that we’ll read about how we can “fill each other’s buckets.”

What Does Kindness Mean?

Ask: “What do you think kindness means?” Encourage 2–3 volunteers to share before revealing the definition.

Examples of Kind Actions

Point to each example and ask if students have done these before. Praise their experiences.

Discussion Time

Distribute discussion cards. Read each prompt and invite 2–3 students to respond. Guide them to speak in full sentences.

Worksheet Activity

Hand out the worksheet. Explain that students will draw one kind act they plan to do this week. Circulate and offer support.

Closing Reflection

Invite each student to name their drawing. Reinforce the importance of practicing kindness all week long.

Welcome Back – Recap

Ask: “Who tried their kind act this week? Would anyone like to share how it went?” Encourage 2–3 volunteers.

Scenario 1

Show the first scenario card. Read: “Alex sees Jamie sitting alone and invites them to play.” Ask: “Was this kind? How do you know?”

Scenario 2

Show the second scenario card. Read: “Maria’s crayons fall; Taylor helps pick them up.” Ask: “Was this kind? What makes it kind?”

Scenario 3

Show the third scenario card. Read: “Ryan takes a toy from Sam without asking.” Ask: “Was this kind? How should Ryan act instead?”

Scenario 4

Show the fourth scenario card. Read: “Evie compliments her friend’s drawing, saying ‘Great job!’” Ask: “Was this kind? How do compliments help?”

Role-Play Activity

Explain the role-play instructions. Model an example: help a friend pick up dropped blocks.

Reflection & Closing

Distribute the reflection worksheet. Ask students to draw or write one kind behavior they practiced today and then share.

Display the Kindness Tree poster template. Give each student a leaf, invite them to draw or write their kindness act, and attach it to the tree.

Reflection & Closing

Hand out the reflection worksheet and explain the closing activity. Invite a few students to share their next-week plan.
