Lesson Plan

Sound vs Listen Outline

Students will learn to distinguish hearing from active listening by participating in sound-based games and activities and then self-assess their listening skills.

Active listening builds focus, empathy, and strong relationship skills. Teaching 1st graders to listen attentively helps them communicate better and form positive connections.

Listening Ears

Welcome students! Today we’re going to learn about the difference between just hearing sounds and really listening. Let’s get our ears ready!

What Is Hearing?

Explain that hearing is something our ears do automatically—it’s when sound waves enter our ears. Ask: “What are some sounds you hear right now?”

What Is Listening?

Highlight that listening is active: it needs focus. Ask: “When have you heard your name but didn’t answer? Why?”

Activity 1: Sound Detective Game

Introduce activity. Remind students to close eyes and raise hand when they think they know the sound. Prepare audio clips.

Activity 2: Story Repeat Challenge

Explain that you will read a short story only once. Encourage partners to whisper reminders if someone forgets.

Cool-Down: Listening Self-Check

Hand out the self-check sheets. Guide students to color or circle icons showing how well they listened.

Closure & Reflection

Invite a few students to share one listening strategy. Reinforce the key point: listening helps us care and make friends.
