Lesson Plan

Manners Matter Lesson Plan

Students will learn what manners are, why they matter, and practice key etiquette skills (greeting politely, saying please and thank you, listening respectfully) through discussion and role-play.

Good manners support positive relationships, boost students’ social-emotional growth, and create a respectful classroom climate. This lesson gives 4th graders practical tools for polite communication in everyday interactions.

Manners Matter!

Welcome students and introduce the lesson. Say: “Today we’re going to talk about manners—what they are and why they’re important. By the end, you’ll have practiced polite words and actions you can use every day.”

What Are Manners?

Ask the class: “What do you think manners are?” Capture responses. Then define: “Manners are polite actions and respectful words we use when talking to others.”

Why Do Manners Matter?

Explain each point: “Manners help us show respect, make friends, and create a positive classroom. When we use good manners, people feel valued.”

Good vs. Poor Manners

Discuss examples. Ask for student input on good and poor manners they’ve seen. Then read the list aloud.
