Mastering Empathy: Walk a Mile
Welcome students and introduce today’s journey: practicing empathy by walking in another’s shoes. Review the lesson flow: role-play, emotion mapping, debrief, and gratitude share.
Define empathy clearly. Explain cognitive vs. emotional empathy. Prompt students: “Can anyone share a time they felt understood?”
Explain the role-play process step-by-step. Emphasize switching perspectives after the first run. Assign groups and hand out scenario cards.
Distribute the Emotion Mapping Chart. Show a quick example on the board. Encourage use of colors, icons, and brief notes to capture feelings.
Lead a whole-class discussion using these prompts. Write student responses on the board under three columns: Challenges, Discoveries, Questions.
Guide a round-robin where each student names something they appreciated about a classmate’s contribution. Keep it positive and concise.
