Welcome to Mastering "No": Emotional Regulation

Introduce the lesson by explaining that our focus will be on understanding the emotions of frustration, disappointment, and calmness—especially when we hear 'no'. Emphasize that these feelings are normal and can be managed with the right strategies.

Session 1: Introduction & Emotion Identification

Discuss each emotion using the Feeling Faces Chart. Focus on what frustration, disappointment, and calmness look like and feel like. Ask guiding questions such as ‘How do you feel when you are frustrated?’ or ‘What does calm look like?’

Session 2: Exploring Emotional Reactions

Recap the key emotions and lead into role-play scenarios that highlight frustration and disappointment, while guiding students toward calm responses. Emphasize the transitions between these emotional states.

Session 3: Coping Strategies

Introduce and demonstrate coping strategies for each specific emotion. Engage in practice activities to solidify learning: deep breathing for calmness, positive self-talk for frustration, and reflective counting for disappointment.

Show a video that reinforces practical strategies for managing emotions. This video provides clear examples of how to manage frustration and disappointment, and guides students toward achieving calmness.

Session 4: Applying and Reflecting

Review all the strategies learned throughout the lesson. Facilitate a group reflection and ensure each student understands how these strategies can be applied when facing 'no'. Wrap up with a summative role-play that integrates all the techniques.
