Mind Detective: Managing Thoughts to Manage Behaviors
Welcome the student and introduce yourself as the facilitator of today’s “Mind Detective” session. Explain that you will work together to notice thoughts and use them to manage how we feel and act. Set a positive, supportive tone.
Warm-Up: Discuss a Challenge
Use this slide to start a warm conversation. Encourage the student to share a recent challenge at school. Ask guiding questions: “What happened?”, “What did you think?”, “How did you feel?”
Read the objective aloud. Explain that having a clear goal helps us know what we’re learning. Affirm student participation as key to success.
Introducing the Thought Detective Chart
Present the chart visually if possible. Point to each column and describe. Emphasize that the chart helps us track the flow from situation to action.
Example: From Unhelpful to Helpful
Walk through each part of the example slowly. Ask the student to notice the difference in feelings and actions. Reinforce that changing thoughts changes outcomes.
Lay out the Unhelpful vs Helpful Thoughts Cards. Guide the student to pick one unhelpful card, read it, and place it on the chart. Prompt him to create a matching helpful thought.
Provide the Behavior Tracking Worksheet. Encourage the student to pick a real moment from today, fill in the four columns, and reflect on the change. Celebrate their detective work and encourage future practice.
