Lesson Plan

Mind Your Manners

Students will recognize the effects of cussing, rudeness, and disrespect, then practice respectful language and following instructions through discussion, role-play, and personal goal-setting.

Explicitly teaching respectful behavior promotes a positive classroom community, builds empathy, and prevents conflicts. Fifth graders gain tools to replace rude words and actions with kind, cooperative alternatives, supporting academic success and strong peer relationships.

Slide Deck

Mind Your Manners

Welcome students! Introduce the title of today’s lesson and get them excited about learning how to use respectful language and follow instructions.

Learning Objectives

Read each objective aloud. Emphasize that by the end of today they will understand the impact of rude language and practice better words and behaviors.

Respectful vs. Rude Words

Ask volunteers to share examples of respectful versus rude words. Record their answers on chart paper or the board in two columns.

Impact of Disrespectful Language

Present a brief disrespectful scenario verbally (e.g., someone calls a peer a name). Ask: “How might that make someone feel?” Note responses and highlight emotional and social impacts.

Role-Play Activity

Explain the role-play rules. Distribute the [Respectful Behavior Scenario Cards](#respectful-behavior-scenario-cards). Assign groups and time limits (about 5 minutes per skit).

Scenario Example 1

Model Scenario 1 yourself: “A student blurts out a cuss word when frustrated.” Then ask the class how to change it. Prompt volunteers to re-enact respectfully.

Scenario Example 2

Model Scenario 2: “A student rolls their eyes and says ‘Whatever!’ when given instructions.” Invite suggestions and a respectful role-play.

Reflection Worksheet

Hand out the [Alternatives Reflection Worksheet](#alternatives-reflection-worksheet). Explain each student will write rude phrases and respectful alternatives.

Personal Goal Setting

Ask each student to think of one personal goal (e.g., using kind words, listening carefully). They should write it on the worksheet and prepare to share.

Key Takeaways & Next Steps

Summarize the main points. Encourage students to practice their goals and remind them you’ll check in next week.
