Respect Radar Lesson Plan

Students will learn to detect classroom conflicts using the “Respect Radar,” practice respectful communication through scenario analysis and role-plays, and identify personal action steps for managing disagreements.

Building respectful communication and problem-solving skills helps create a positive classroom culture, reduces disruptions, and empowers students to resolve conflicts constructively.

Students will learn simple mindfulness techniques like deep breathing to calm their bodies and minds and choose one tool to use when they feel upset or distracted.

Introducing mindfulness to 2nd graders helps them notice feelings, practice calm-down tools early, and build focus and confidence in a supportive classroom.

Welcome class! Display the Mindful Moments Poster and read the title. Explain: Today we will learn fun calm tools.

Calm Tool: Deep Breathing

Show the Deep Breathing card. Teach students to breathe like a flower: hands up when you breathe in, hands down when you breathe out. Practice 3 times.

Calm Tool: Look & Name

Show the Look & Name card. Explain: Look around and name 5 things you see. Practice naming together.

Practice with a Friend

Have students turn to a partner. Give each pair a Calm Tool card. Ask them to practice the tool together.

Our Calm Promise

Lead the class in a calm promise. Ask students to place a hand on their heart and say together: “When I feel big feelings, I will use my calm tool.”
