Students will identify and label their own emotions, recognize feelings in others, and practice selecting healthy coping strategies in everyday situations through interactive activities.

Developing emotion awareness and empathy helps 4th graders improve peer interactions, manage stress, and build resilience. Tier 2 SEL support boosts self-regulation and social skills in a small-group setting.

Welcome the students warmly. Introduce yourself as their Heart & Mind Detective guide. Explain that today they’ll explore emotions together.

Today’s Agenda

Briefly walk through the session flow so students know what to expect. Emphasize that we’ll do activities and share thoughts.

Welcome & Check-In

Invite each student to share one word describing how they feel. Refer to the Feelings Anchor Chart to help them find the right word.

Emotion Identification

Distribute Emotion Cards. Model picking one, naming it, and showing it on your face/body. Encourage students to follow.

Perspective-Taking Game

Explain the scenario game rules. Model drawing a card and discussing. Prompt students to pick matching emotion cards and justify their choices.

Coping Strategy Exploration

Show the Coping Strategies Wheel. Spin or choose a strategy. Guide students through a quick practice (e.g., deep breathing).

Wrap-Up & Reflection

Hand out Emotion Journals. Give students time to write. Encourage volunteers to share one learning or strategy.
