Lesson Plan

Muddy Empathy Lesson Plan

Students will explore empathy and perspective-taking using an excerpt from Richard Peck’s Fuzzy Mud to identify characters’ feelings and motivations, then practice stepping into others’ shoes through discussion and role-play.

Building empathy helps students understand peers’ perspectives, reduces conflict, and fosters a more inclusive classroom environment by teaching emotional awareness and compassionate responses.
