My Unique Self Lesson Plan

Students will identify and celebrate their unique qualities by reflecting on likes, personal attributes, and family, then share and illustrate these aspects to build self-awareness and confidence.

Developing a strong sense of identity helps first graders build self-esteem, understand diversity among peers, and fosters a positive classroom community. This lesson encourages reflection, expression, and peer interaction.

My Unique Self

Welcome students and introduce the concept of identity. Say: “Today we’re going to explore what makes each of us special and unique!”

What Is Identity?

Define identity for students. Ask: “What makes you, you?” Prompt a few responses.

Identity Reflection Template

Display the template on chart paper or projector. Model filling in your own example.

Individual Reflection

Distribute the [My Unique Self Worksheet](#my-unique-self-worksheet). Circulate and help students think of ideas as they write or draw.

Self-Portrait Illustration

Encourage use of color and detail. Remind students to show their hair, clothes, and favorite items.

Peer Sharing

Pair students. Model sharing with a volunteer: “My favorite thing is pizza, and I am kind.”

Group Reflection & Closure

Bring class back together. Invite 2–3 volunteers to share. Record responses on chart paper.
