Connect & Grow: Networking Basics

Welcome students and introduce the session. Explain that today’s focus is learning how to build and maintain professional connections both in-person and online.

What Is Networking?

Define networking in simple terms. Emphasize that networking is a two-way street—not just asking favors but sharing and building relationships.

Why Networking Matters

Share local or famous examples of how networking led to unexpected opportunities (e.g., a job referral or mentorship).

In-Person Networking Best Practices

Demonstrate a friendly handshake and open posture. Invite students to try with a partner.

Online Networking Best Practices

Show a sample LinkedIn profile screenshot if possible. Discuss the importance of consistency between in-person and online personas.

Crafting Your Elevator Pitch

Model a brief elevator pitch (20–30 seconds). Ask a volunteer to share theirs next. Provide supportive feedback.

Networking Dos & Don'ts

Highlight that networking etiquette applies both in-person and online.

Real-World Example & Discussion

Share a brief story about a student or professional who landed a role through a well-timed follow-up. Then facilitate discussion using the prompts.

Next Steps & Resources

Remind students of the templates and materials available. Encourage them to practice today and report back on their homework.
