Own Your Actions: Understanding Accountability

Welcome students and introduce the lesson. Explain that today we’ll explore accountability—what it means and why it matters. Mention this is based on our SEL goals for personal growth and positive relationships.

What is Accountability?

Ask students to share in one or two words what comes to mind when they hear “accountability.” Record responses on chart paper. Then reveal the formal definition.

Why Accountability Matters

Highlight each benefit. Invite brief examples of times students felt trust or stronger relationships when someone owned up to a mistake.

Scenario Analysis

Divide into small groups and hand out the scenarios. Circulate, prompt deeper thinking (“How else could they make it right?”). After 5 minutes, ask one group to share.

Individual Reflection

Distribute the reflection worksheet. Encourage students to choose a real situation they faced and be honest.

Share & Create Class Pledge

Invite volunteers to read their goals. On chart paper, co-create a simple pledge (e.g., “I commit to speak up and admit mistakes”). Record it publicly.

Closing & Next Steps

Wrap up by reminding students to post their personal goal in their notebooks or lockers and revisit it daily. Encourage them to support each other in staying accountable.
