Pulse Check Lesson Plan

Students will practice a structured daily check-in to build self-awareness and emotional regulation by identifying and expressing their current emotions and setting a small goal for the day.

This quick SEL routine helps students recognize and name feelings, regulate emotions, and set simple goals. It promotes self-awareness, reduces anxiety, and builds group cohesion, preparing students for successful learning and positive peer relationships.

Welcome students, introduce today’s routine and its purpose: building self-awareness and emotional regulation through a quick daily check-in.

Warm-Up: 4-4-8 Breathing

Guide the whole class through the 4-4-8 breathing. Model slowly and count out loud; invite students to follow along.

Introducing the Check-In Tool

Display the worksheet on the board. Walk through each section, then model a sample entry.

Worksheet Layout

Point to the parts of the worksheet as you explain. Encourage questions to clarify.

Group Sharing Guidelines

Set expectations: sharing is voluntary, respectful listening, confidentiality. Invite 2-3 volunteers.

Exit Reflection

Invite students to pick a reflection prompt and think or jot a quick note. Collect cards or let students keep for reference.
