Sea of Emotions

Welcome students and introduce today’s topic: exploring emotions with the Sea of Emotions metaphor. Share the lesson objective: to recognize different emotional states and learn strategies to navigate them.

Warm-Up: How Do You Feel Today?

Guide students through a quick physical check-in: thumbs-up (good), thumbs-down (not so good), or wave (in between). Brainstorm a list of emotion words on the board.

Emotions as the Sea

Introduce the metaphor: emotions are like the sea, shifting in intensity and pace. Emphasize that all ‘sea conditions’ are natural and temporary.

The Sea of Emotions: Four States

Show or pass out the [Emotion Wave Cards](#emotion-wave-cards). Explain each card and invite students to share real-life examples of when they’ve felt each way.

Reflection Activity

Distribute the [Sea of Emotions Reflection Worksheet](#sea-of-emotions-reflection-worksheet). Explain how to map emotions from the past week onto the sea diagram and label coping strategies.

Navigating the Waves: Coping Strategies

Collect strategy ideas from students and record them under each sea state. Reinforce that different tools work for different feelings.

Debrief & Takeaways

Invite volunteers to share part of their sea diagram and coping strategy. Highlight community support and remind students to use these tools when big waves arrive.
