Lesson Plan

Sea of Emotions Lesson Plan

Students will identify and express a range of emotions using ocean-themed characters, share personal feelings, and practice empathy in a supportive small-group setting.

Building foundational socio-emotional skills in a fun under-the-sea context helps 3rd graders feel safe sharing feelings, connect with peers, and develop empathy essential for success in and out of school.

Slide Deck

Sea of Emotions

Welcome everyone to our ‘Sea of Emotions’ adventure! Today we’ll explore feelings just like sea creatures explore the ocean. Use this slide to set the tone, share the agenda, and build excitement.

Welcome & Warm-Up

Say: “Let’s sit in our circle and imagine we’re under the sea. I’ll start: I feel like a curious dolphin today because I’m excited to learn about feelings!” Invite each student to pick a sea creature and share how it might feel.

Feelings Introduction

Display a few [Ocean Feelings Cards](#ocean-feelings-cards). Model naming one (e.g., “This clam looks calm—I feel calm when I read a book”). Then invite students to pick a card, name the emotion, and give a quick example.

Fish Sharing Activity

Hand out one [Blank Fish Cutout](#blank-fish-cutouts) per student along with markers or crayons. Guide them step-by-step: choose an emotion, draw the fish’s face, write the emotion word. Once all finished, have them stand up and share.

Empathy Wave

Explain the Empathy Wave: one student says an empathetic statement to the person on their right while passing an ‘invisible wave.’ Model one turn, then go around so each child gives and receives an empathy response.

Reflection & Close

Gather students by the [Emotion Anchor Chart Poster](#emotion-anchor-chart-poster). Review the words: happy, sad, excited, calm, etc. Ask why noticing and sharing feelings matters. End on a positive note and preview future check-ins.
