Self-Reg Superpower!

Welcome students! Explain that self-regulation is like having a superpower that helps us control our emotions and actions. Tell them today they’ll learn what self-regulation means and why it’s important. Prompt: “What superpowers do you know?” Connect to our power over feelings.

What Is Self-Regulation?

Introduce a clear, kid-friendly definition. Emphasize the control aspect. Ask students to repeat the definition aloud.

Recognizing Triggers

Explain that triggers are things or situations that make us feel strong emotions. Give examples, then invite students to call out their own triggers.

Calming Technique #1: Deep Breathing

Model deep breathing: breathe in through nose for 4 seconds, hold 2 seconds, breathe out through mouth for 4 seconds. Encourage students to place a hand on their belly and try together.

Calming Technique #2: Counting

Introduce counting: explain that counting gives the brain something simple to focus on. Practice counting slowly together.

Your Turn to Practice

Wrap up: remind students to list their own triggers and pick one technique to try. Distribute the activity sheet and worksheet. Explain that next time they’ll share how it went.
