Strategies for Saying No

Welcome students. Introduce the topic and explain that today’s focus is on concrete ways to say “no” when facing peer pressure.

What Is Peer Pressure?

Define peer pressure and contrast positive vs. negative examples to set the stage for why refusal skills matter.

Why Refusal Skills Matter

Emphasize the benefits of strong refusal skills: staying safe, respecting yourself, and helping peers do the same.

Four Key Refusal Strategies

Quickly list the top strategies. You’ll dive deeper into each next.

Strategy 1: The Firm “No”

Explain how a clear, confident “no” works. Provide the example on the slide and invite students to repeat.

Strategies 2 & 3

Cover two more strategies together to save time. Provide examples and ask for quick thumbs-up if they understand.

Strategy 4: Enlist Support & Body Language

Wrap up the strategies by introducing non-verbal tools and peer support. Stress that body language counts.

Summary & Next Steps

Transition to the role-play activity. Remind students they’ll use these strategies in pairs using the worksheet.
