Stand Up, Speak Out Lesson Plan

Students will identify bullying behaviors, practice safe strategies to stand up, and learn ways to support peers through interactive scenarios and role-plays.

This lesson builds empathy, empowers students with concrete skills to intervene safely, reduces bullying incidents, and fosters a more inclusive school community.

Welcome students and introduce the session. Explain that today we’ll learn how to recognize bullying, practice safe ways to stand up, and support each other.

Learning Objectives

Read the objectives aloud and connect them to students’ experiences. Emphasize the “why” behind each goal.

What Is Bullying?

Ask students to share their own ideas before revealing the formal definition. Write key words on chart paper.

Types of Bullying

Briefly illustrate each type with an age-appropriate example. Invite students to add others.

Warm-Up Discussion

Use the question prompts to spark discussion. Capture student responses on chart paper.

Explore Bullying Scenarios

Explain group setup: each group gets a scenario card to analyze. Model one example together.

Example Scenario

Display a sample scenario (see [Bullying Scenarios Cards](#bullying-scenarios-cards)) and walk through the analysis.

Stand-Up Strategies

Introduce the three steps: notice, speak up, seek help. Emphasize assertive language.

Role-Play Activity

Pair students and assign each a new scenario. Circulate to coach and encourage use of assertive tone.

Support & Class Pledge

Distribute the Peer Support Checklist. Guide students to pick two actions and write them down. Then co-create a class pledge.
